Synopsis:
The story of Nero's ruthless bid to exile his wife and crown his mistress, Poppea, as his empress. The opera premiered in 1642 in Venice, about 40 years after opera itself was invented. Monteverdi was particularly interested in using the power of music to express the text and he broke with the tradition of using mythological characters for the story; he used people out of history.
